- Robert Henley, the first earl of Northington, was born 1708 and died 1772. He was appointed Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain in 1761 and a member of the Whig Party in Parliament. His grandfather, Sir Robert Henley, who was the Master of the Court of the King's Bench, commissioned William Samwell from 1664 to 1673 to build the Northington Grange. The house was owned by the Henley family from 1662-1787.

Accompanied by two additional manuscripts. One titled "State of sales of Lord Northington estate," dated April 14, 1787, is a post-auction report by John Thomas Batt of what had been sold and what remains to be sold with respective prices. The other "Letter of attorney from Lady Bridget Tollemache and other [illegible] of Lord Northington to Mr. Batt + Mr. Woodcock, 24 July 1786," in an unidentified hand, signed by Bridget Tollemache, Jane Aston, Willoughby Aston, and Mary Countess Ligonier, appointing John Thomas Batt as their attorney for matters related to the sale of the estate and effects belonging to Robert, late earl of Northington.
Accompanied by a printed auction catalog, "Particulars, and conditions of sale, of several very valuable manors, advowsons, and freehold estates ... consisting of the extensive manors of Northington, Totford, Swarraton, and Godsfield, the Grainge Manor, and Lordship of Serveton otherwise Swarroughton; and the noble and superb mansion called the Grainge, ... and the very desirable Manor of Bradley, ... also, the advowson of the rectory of Bradley, ... which will be sold by auction, by Mr. W. Young, on Wednesday, the 11th of April, 1787, at twelve o' clock, at Garraway's coffee-house, 'Change-Alley, London, in two lots, by order of the co-heiresses of the Right Hon. the Earl of Northington, deceased."
