Robert Henley, the first earl of Northington, was born 1708 and died 1772. He was appointed Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain in 1761 and a member of the Whig Party in Parliament. His grandfather, Sir Robert Henley, who was the Master of the Court of the King's Bench, commissioned William Samwell from 1664 to 1673 to build the Northington Grange. The house was owned by the Henley family from 1662-1787.
