- The Grimwades factory opened in 1886, under the directorship of Leonard Lumsden Grimwade. He was soon joined by his brother Sidney, forming Grimwade Brothers, which would later become Grimwades Ltd. The company grew rapidly, its success due in part to the brothers' pioneering techniques; they helped develop a process of lithographic transfer which streamlined and cheapened manufacturing. During the late 1920s, the company started using the trading name Royal Winton, after one of their more successful designs.
The front pastedown bears a printed label of "Sherwin & Co. (Hanley) Ltd." dated 1945.
Bound in thick paper boards, reinforced with strips of leather.
Album of ceramic designs for Grimwades Ltd, Stoke-on Strent. The volume includes descriptions of almost 2000 numbered designs, arranged nine per page in grid formation. Wares include vases, lamp bases, plates, cigarette boxes, tobacco jars, coffee sets, tea sets, tankards, conch ware, nursery ware, and cake stands. The latter part of the album appears to be largely devoted to chintzware. In the earlier parts of the album, the designs are briefly described in a contemporary hand and illustrated with hand-drawn and hand-colored vignettes. The illustrations are drawn directly into the ledger or tipped in. Some of the designs are accompanied by lithographed transfers, presumably the same transfers used in the ceramic production. In the latter part of the album, few designs are illustrated.
The descriptions contain varying amounts of detail, but usually not more than about six or seven lines. For example, design 631: "Opera Scenes, litho. Honey Glaze. Liquid gold edge of laced handles + gold stamp gadroon type border adjoining edge. Cups have gold line on inside close to edge, footed cups have gold footline." Design 451 has a far shorter description: "Lamp bases. As 457 but Honey Glaze."
Loosely inserted are several sheets of paper bearing draft descriptions of some of the designs. Some of these sheets have printed heading "Grimwades Limited. Packing Sheet." - Subject Terms:
