- In the census of 1861, Emma Kate Bleeck, aged 13, is listed as one of three daughters of Martha and William Bleeck (the latter was "Rector of the Parish"). Her sister Ada is listed as age 16. The census of 1911 shows Bleeck and her sister still living together, at the Old Rectory, Froxfield. From 1917 to 1919, Bleeck served the Red Cross, cooking one day per week at the hospital at Hungerford.
Illustrated manuscript stories by Emma Kate ("Katie") Bleeck, of Huish Episcopi, Somerset. The stories are written in black ink throughout, in a consistent cursive hand. Each is illustrated with small watercolor illustrations (from four to seven per volume). Authorship is inferred from an inscription at the beginning of volume 2: "Ada Bleeck. Hewish Rectory. A birth-day gift from Katie. Octber. 19th, 1861." Each of the four volumes contains a different story, each with a title page. All volumes are bound in cloth, probably also decorated by Bleeck.
The tales feature protagonists of similar background to the author. Volume 1 ("Millie and Hermie"), for example, concerns sisters aged 12 and 13, residents of a priory. Subject matter is primarily domestic in nature. - Subject Terms:
