Printed in sepia ink from key blocks of color wood engravings; pages [4], 9, 16, 21, 26, 35, 46, and 55 printed in full color (versos blank)--to face corresponding outlines.
Similar to, but with different contents from: A painting book. London : G. Routledge & Sons, [1884].
Osborne Coll. dating accepted; no later than 1901 (date of inscription in Osborne Coll. copy), and almost certainly not earlier than 1899, when Routledge, Greenaway's original publisher, went bankrupt. Schuster & Engen's "[c1888?]" is impossible: "A painting book" was still in print in 1889 or later, under the imprint of G. Routledge & Sons, Ltd. (see Schuster & Engen 149.2b).
In green color pictorial paper over flexible boards; front cover vignette of girl painting a doll, a close re-engraving of the cover vignette of "A painting book", superimposed on a central white roundel, with borders of vine leaves; back cover, girl pointing out advertisement with an umbrella.
