John Linnell was Samuel Palmer’s father-in-law, and while the two had much in common, there were also deep differences. Palmer was a Tory and High Church Anglican. Linnell was radical in politics and a fervent Baptist. Both, however, used representations of the English countryside to articulate religious and political beliefs. In this small landscape, Linnell transposes the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt to an English woodland. Gallery label for installation of YCBA collection, 2016
