From around 1800 Robert Hills was an active member of the Sketching Society, a group of like-minded artists who met on winter evenings to discuss their art and to draw. Regular summer trips to the countryside around London allowed them to sketch in the open air directly from nature. This unfinished sketch was likely the product of one of the Sketching Society's annual summer trips. All across the foreground are copious notes in the distinctive shorthand that was shared by other members of the group but which remains undeciphered.
