Inscribed on verso in graphite: "D 659 / George Chinnery 1774 - 1852 | This Drawing in lamp black and Indian ink of a Pipul Tree in India is a study for the water colour belonging to Mrs. Dames Longworth which was exhibited as No. 27 in the Loan Exhibition at the Tate Gallery 1932. Mrs. Dames Longworth gave it to me in November 1930. As the subect is Indian the date is not later than 1825, when Chinnery left India for Macao. | LGD"
