Inscribed on verso in graphite: "Of all the pictures that didn't make it into the final | 'Shipping Forecast' edit this is the one in retrospect | I really wish I'd included. The problem was simple | enough: I had too many 'good' pictures from sea area | Dover to use them all. | It was taken in Broadstairs, one of my favourite places | in the UK. Dickens liked it too; he wrote 'David | Copperfield' here. The light was fading fast; I vividly | recall this little girl sitting quietly on an ancient | merry-go-round, eating an apple. She had her face | painted at another fairground stall... her eyes were | heavily made up and her cheeks deeply rouged, like some miniature burlesque dancer. | The picture an early one in the series, taught me I didn't | need to always include the sea in my frame. The telling | of space and that very specific coastal light are enough | to locate us. It opened up all sorts of other possibilities for the rest of the project. | This print was made to raise funds for | the student/alumni books celebrating | 21 years of photography at the U.O.B 2013"; lower center: "6/12"
