Lettered, center left: "ENGRAVED BRASSES are one of the quieter glories of our churches and cathedrals. The art of the lattener has preserved for the observant visitor not only a beauty of design and craftsman ship but a true record of costume and knightly armour. Sir John, with prick spurs upon his heels, has lain in the church at Stoke D'Abernon since 1277; Lady Tiptoft, in her lion-embroidered mantle, rests in Enfield; John and Ellyne Orgone cryptically admonish the reader in the bright serenity of St. Olave's, Hart Street. Brasses give more than a fragmentary portrait of mediaeval England, more even than a life-long interest to the antiquarian. They provide an absorbing hobby; for the visitor can, with permission, take away a faithful reproduction of his discoveries. | A free leaflet showing how to make a brass rubbing and giving additional churches is now available.
