In 1816-17 James Hakewill undertook an extensive tour of Italy, making over three hundred graphite drawings. Hakewell employed other artists, including J. M. W. Turner, to transform the drawings into watercolors, and these were then engraved and published as A Picturesque Tour of Italy in 1820. This engraving is derived from one of the watercolors Turner (who had not yet visited Italy) made from Hakewill's sketches. In 1820 Hakewill set off on his extensive tour of Jamaica. His Italian tour, as re-envisioned by Turner, seems to have exerted a strong influence on his perceptions of the Jamaican landscape, and the topographical views in particular, such as the Waterfall on the Windward Road near Kingston, owe much to A Picturesque Tour of Italy.
