The subject of this rare bronze bust has been identified, on the basis of close comparison with a portrait by Cornelius Jonson, as the royalist naval and army officer Robert Bertie, 1st Earl of Lindsey (1582-1642). Lindsey was one of Charles I's loyalist privy councilors. In 1628, he witnessed the assassination of Charles's favorite, the Duke of Buckingham, and afterwards interrogated the duke's assassin, John Felton. In the civil war, Lord Lindsey was one of Charles's senior generals, and was killed at the Battle of Edgehill. Gallery label for installation of YCBA collection, 2005
