Sandby visited Canterbury in the early 1780s and sketched the city's medieval West Gate. This unfinished oil sketch and related gouache both represent the West Gate from different angles. The oil sketch was executed in paper and includes under-drawing in pen and ink, indicative of Sandby's tendency to handle oil in much the same way as he handled gouache at this midpoint in his career.
