The artist of the present work is probably William Parkinson, who contributed illustrations to various London magazines in the 1880s and 1890s (see: Houfe, Bryant & Heneage). A William Parkinson is also recorded as treasurer of the Temporary Home for Lost and Starving Dogs circa 1870."This was got up for a bazaar in aid of a ragged school, and having since served at other bazaars, the copies still left on hand after doing their best for human-beings, may surely ... be handed over to the annual bazaars of the Temporary Home for Lost and Starving Dogs, formerly at Holloway, now at Lower Wandsworth Road, Battersea. ..."--Notice affixed to the inside of the front wrapper.Cover title.A small collection of six short illustrated pieces, compiled for the benefit of the Temporary Home for Lost and Starving Dogs (perhaps in conjunction with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), which was later known as the Battersea Dog & Cats Home. Most of the items in the collection are illustrated by William Parkinson; several are dated by him 1866.
