Illustrated handkerchief, printed in red on cotton, with a caption title and ten satirical vignettes with descriptions beneath. The work satirizes British concern about a French invasion after the 1851 coup d'état of Louis-Napoléon Buonaparte. The Militia Act of 1852 strengthened the role of the militia and volunteer forces in public order, and was accompanied by increased recruitment, partly by ballot.
