Illustrated handkerchief, printed in red on cotton, with a caption title and ten satirical vignettes with descriptions beneath. The work satirizes British concern about a French invasion after the 1851 coup d'état of Louis-Napoléon Buonaparte. The Militia Act of 1852 strengthened the role of the militia and volunteer forces in public order, and was accompanied by increased recruitment, partly by ballot.Scenes in the present satirical handkerchief depict the selection by ballot of a Mr. John Jones for the Patriotic Sudbury Militia; his unsuccessful attempts to arrange a substitute ("The man who took his money has bolted!"); and images of drill, chaotic cavalrymen, etc. One of the vignettes also shows a female corps marching in petticoats.
