Accounts of voyages made by European explorers to the East Indies.

The set is also commonly known by the Petits voyages.

Imprint from part 1.

The first eight parts of the series in German were published (1597-1606) by Johann Theodor de Bry and Johann Israel de Bry. Johann Theodor alone issued parts 9-11. The final parts (12-13) were published by Matthaeus Merian.

The present German edition was published simultaneously with (or slightly before) a Latin edition. See Church (v. 1, p. 320) for a "Table exhibiting the several editions and issues of the Small voyages of de Bry," including both the Latin and the German editions.

Church, E.D. Catalogue of books relating to the discovery and early history of North and South America, 226, etc.

BAC: British Art Center copy is complete, with all the maps and plates. Bound in later brown cloth. From the library of Mary Cecil Frankland, 16th Baroness Zouche. Collated in 1949 by Henry Stevens, whose detailed typescript description (together with that of the Grands voyages) is included herewith (Suppl. volume with the Grands voyages). As noted in the Stevens collation, the BAC copy is a mixture of the first and second editions, as follows: Parts 1 and 3-5 are from the first edition; parts 2 and 6 are from the second edition; parts 7-13 are from the sole edition. Furter details on issue, variation, etc., are available in the Stevens collation.
