BAC has two copies of the accompanying text: NC795 .C58 1826 (copies 1 and 2).Optical entertainment consisting of a lacquered and decorated two-piece wooden box containing a wooden viewing frame with a pull-down screen and 12 scenes adhered to wooden frames. Six scenes depict foregrounds, while the six others depict background skies. Nine of the scenes are hand-colored aquatints and three are watercolors. Users may combine one foreground image with one background to create a composite scene, to be illuminated from behind with a lamp (not provided).Accompanied by the publication: The amateur's assistant, or, A series of instructions in sketching from nature: the application of perspective, tinting of sketches, drawing in water-colours, transparent painting &c. &c. to accompany the subjects which form The portable diorama by John Clark (London: Samuel Leigh, 1826). The booklet offers instructions on how to convert any sketch into a finished transparency.
