Notes:
Collection of about 100 mid-19th century drawings, in graphite, of French, Italian, and English churches, by an unknown artist. All appear to be the work of a professional English architect. The locations of English subjects suggest that the artist may have been a native of the West Country. Most places depicted are named, and some have additional hand-written notes. Many of the more technical drawings include measurements. The dates suggest summer sketching trips. Years of dated items include 1854 (France), 1857 (England), and 1859 (Italy and France). The majority of the sheets measure 25 x 17.5 cm, with a handful of slightly smaller sheets. Drawings include building plans, exterior views, exterior elevations, and details (with some cross-sections) of alters, arches, bell towers, buttresses, candlesticks, capitals, columns, doorways and door knockers, friezes, lecterns, shrines, statues, tombs, and windows.
