Elizabeth Jane Crompton was the fourth of ten children of Joshua Crompton of York (1754-1832) and Anna Maria Rookes of Esholt (1763-1819). In 1814, her sister Maria Anne Crompton married Henry Preston of Moreby, after which Elizabeth joined the newlyweds on a tour of Scotland.
