Though unattributed, the diary is probably the work of George Burton Osborne, retired Paymaster Captain in the British Navy. In the entry for November 13, 1939, Osborne notes the death of his mother, Julia Elizabeth Powel Osborne, aged 92. The 1939 England and Wales Register (Saltash, Cornwall) lists George B. Osborne as Secretary for the Royal United Service Orphan Home for Girls, Stoke; he lived with Irene J.H. Osborne (born 1884), listed as "Command 1st aid post."
