Notes:
"The first establishment to employ a drawing-master was the Royal Mathematical School at Christ's Hospital. There orphans of the city guilds who had shown promise in the basis of reading, writing, Latin and arithmetic, were taught the extra subjects necessary for navigation so that they might be bound out to sea: geometry, trigonometry, astronomy, and reading and making maps and charts. Drawing was also a useful skill for recording coastal views and new lands. Bernard and Edward Lens and Alexander Cozens held this post in succession at Christ's Hospital and under their guidance the boys produced these magnificent records of their lessons."--Kim Sloan, in The line of beauty (2001).
