Notes:
Hand-made booket illustrating the components the Union Jack (or Union Flag), the national flag of Great Britain. Across three panels it displays the cross of St. George (at left, representing England), the cross of St. Andrew (center, representing Scotland), and the cross of St. Patrick (at right, representing Ireland). The crosses of St. George and St. Patrick are hinged so that they may be stacked atop the cross of St. Andrew, producing the composite image that forms the Union Jack. The idea for the booklet comes from an unidentified printed source, which has been clipped and pasted across the three panels here. When folded closed, one cover of the booklet bears the title ("Origin ...") over depictions of the four flags, drawn in black ink with watercolor. The verso features a layered cut-paper design, with blue velvet; its central silk panel is dated 1868.
