Notes:
Description based on an incomplete set of 16 cards at the Yale Center for British Art.BAC: British Art Center copy incomplete: comprises 16 cards.A series of etched pictorial cards, published by J.S. and Company, London, parodying the craze for carte de visite photographs, presumably in the 1860s. About half are signed with the monogram T.O., id est Thomas Onwhyn; it's unclear if the unsigned may also be by Onwhyn. The measurements echo those of cartes de visite photographs. Captions occupy a horizontal band along the bottom, just above the imprint at lower left, and a sequential number at lower right. The cards are clearly intended as humorous spoofs, some ridiculing the social mores of the time, the pomposity, stiffness, and poses of cartes de visite. A number relate to Christmas or New Year's celebrations.Similar cards were published by Rock and Company (London) and by an unidentified publisher (or publishers). See links herewith.
