Nation of shopkeepers: trade ephemera from 1654 to the 1860s in the John Johnson Collection, no. 211The box top is embossed and printed (in gold and blue), depicting the breadth of the Crystal Palace and surrounding grounds, above the words "Papeterie for all nations." The depiction is signed Mansell, London (i.e. Joseph Mansell, printer and embossing specialist, and a notable manufacturer of Victorian Valentine cards). The inside of the box includes six folded sheets of stationery measuring 19 x 12 cm (folded), and five sheets measuring 14 x 10 cm (folded). Both sizes of stationery feature variant versions of a blind-embossed depiction of the Crystal Palace (the embossing on the larger sheets within an elaborate border). Also present are two groups of envelopes, each wrapped by a decorative band of paper in white in silver. Each group contains six envelopes. The back flap of each envelope bears a small blind-embossed depiction of the Crystal Palace.
