Notes:
"'Oliver Twist' was originally published as a serial in Bentley's Miscellany from February 1837 to March 1839. The story was issued in three-volume edition in 1838, 1839 and 1841. 'A New Edition, revised and corrected' was sold in ten Monthly parts in 1846. When it was republished in 1867 as a volume of the 'Charles Dickens' Edition of Dickens's Works, the Author revised the text again, and it is from that edition that the present text is taken. The page-headings added by Dickens in 1867 are printed here in the margins against the relevant passages. Cruikshank's illustrations are printed from the plates etched for the story in Bentley's Miscellany, except that on p. xvi, which is reproduced photographically from a print, the plate having been destroyed at the request of Dickens. To the illustrations made for the original edition we have added two others made in the Author's lifetime, the wood-engraving designed by Cruikshank for the Cheap Edition of 1850 and the engraved title-page by H.K. Browne (Phiz) from the Library Edition of 1858, printed here from the original steel plate."--Page V.
