Notes:
Thomas Gilchrist (1812-1856) was the stepson of Charles Frederick Schlaberg (1794-1883). The present silver mug appears to have been made for Gilchrist's christening. Gilchrist would later become an officer in the Royal Artillery and died in the Crimean War, in 1856.

Inscribed: "Thos. Gilchrist, born 15th July 1812." The mug also bears an inscription of the Gilchrist family motto: "I hope to speed."

The mug bears the following hallmarks: an unidentified maker's mark comprised of the letter 'S' alone; the lion passant assay mark; the leopard's head mark of origin, indicating manufacture in London; the date letter 'R', indicating manufacture in the year 1812-1813; and the sovereign's head duty mark.
