The De Worms family of Surrey were hereditary barons of the Austrian Empire; the family name appears frequently in listings of Jewish aristocrats in Britain. Baron Anthony D.M.G. De Worms (1869-1938) and his wife Louisa "Lulu" M. De Worms (1876-1948) had three children: Charles (1903-1979), George, (1904-1968), and Violet Henrietta (1912-1984). Charles De Worms achieved renown as a notable chemist at London and as an author of works on lepidoptera.The front pastedown is inscribed, in a later hand: Found by Osman Otterway [?] at [Milton Park] Estate, Egham, Surrey. George de Worms, Milton Park, Egham.Bound in contemporary red half roan and red cloth; spine lacking.Scrapbook recording the family vacations of the De Worms family, of Milton Park, Egham, Surrey, in 1912 and 1913. The album includes original photographs of the family, additional ephemeral printed views of places visited, and diary-style entries recording the family's short motoring excursions or other summer recreations and socializing. Most of the content appears to cover family holidays, from August through December in 1912, and in April 1913. There is also an additional brief entry dated May 1922. The compiler of the scrapbook is almost certainly Baroness Louisa De Worms, who makes constant reference to her husband, Tony (Baron Anthony De Worms), and her children, Charlie, Georgie, and Mouffie. Diary entries are in a single hand, in pen and black ink. Many of the original photographs depict Charlie and George, and a fair number also depict Anthony; Louisa may thus have also been the primary photographer.The family travels mostly within a day or two of Surrey, going to Winchester, Folkestone, Canterbury, and the New Forest. Their trips are largely planned around the time of the children's school holidays, in summer and at Easter. The family travels by automobile, and their motor car is depicted in several photos. A leisurely lifestyle is described on the album's pages, with games of croquet and cards, motoring expeditions, walks on the shore, butterfly hunting, sight-seeing, tennis, golf, and tea with family and friends featuring in some combination almost daily. The pursuit and capture of butterflies and moths is described at some length, with careful attention to species and capturing methodology. Several photographs depict the children with butterfly nets.
