Items like the present box were sometimes produced by French prisoners of war in Britain, as a source of revenue for clothing and food. The box resembles work made by prisoners of war at Norman Cross (see Peterborough Museum & Art Gallery).The box is double-hinged in two sections, with a drawer beneath. Each compartment features contemporary hand-colored etchings and letterpress text (in French), cut out and mounted under glass. The box has been constructed from card, then covered with tiny pieces of straw, in yellow and green, to create a woven appearance. The images enclosed relate to love and wine.
