Contemporary directories record the firm of Day and Martin as manufacturers of waterproof Japanese blacking, at 97 High Holborn (London).Front of the card features an image of three men (and a dog) hunting, with a punning caption: "A useful trait. Brown: 'Feet wet? Why didn't you use the Japanese Waterproof Polish, made at 97, High Holborn? Coat of it wouldn't hurt your dog Tray.' Jones: 'The dog! What for?' Brown: He'd be so useful to fetch and carry--a sort of Japanese Tray, you know.'"
