Bound in contemporary dark green quarter roan and gray boards, with manuscript label on front cover. The front pastedown Ackermann & Co., Repository of Arts, 96, Strand--presumably where the present sketchbook was purchased by the artist.Subject matter includes houses, churches, mills, and rural scenery. The artist--initials "J.J."--provides captions in graphite for most of the drawings; some are dated, from 1843 to 1844. A label on the front cover, written in manuscript, notes locations: "Knowbury, Stoke Castle, Downton Castle, Ramsgate, Buford, Rugby, Leamington, Brockleton."
