This portrait of a pensive young woman is the last known work of the pastelist Archibald Skirving, painted just four years before his death. The inscription “Sir John Pringle Bart” appears on an old label, suggesting that the sitter was Emilia Anne MacLeod, who married Sir John in 1809. The work is in its original walnut frame, probably by the firm of William Chambers & Son of Edinburgh, from whom Skirving purchased frames.
