A designer, writer, and artist, Cecil Beaton was the greatest British photographer of the twentieth century, an icon of fashion whose style and technical brilliance shaped the image of the bohemian generation forged in the 1920s and 1930s. Charles Ryskamp was the young and charismatic director of New York’s Pierpont Morgan Library (now the Morgan Library & Museum) when Beaton asked him to sit on a visit to New York. Ryskamp recalled Beaton talking continuously but brilliantly through the entire sitting. Gallery label for A Decade of Gifts and Acquisitions (Yale Center for British Art, 2017-06-01 - 2017-08-13)
