William Barraud and his younger brother, Henry, were both painters and often worked collaboratively in the 1830s and 1840s producing sporting pictures and small portraits in the tradition of the conversation piece. It has often been assumed that William specialized in animal painting and Henry in landscape, but the exact nature of their collaboration is in fact harder to unravel. Their clientele was mostly country gentry, and in this example four children play outdoors, the son riding a horse with his youngest sister while one older girl feeds the horse as the other gathers flowers. Their identity has not been established conclusively, but this picture may be The children of Thomas Keen, Esq. with their favorite pony, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1836.
