Created by Ben Nicholson (1894–1982), the artist; acquired by The Lefevre Gallery, London, England by October 1950 [1][a]; acquired by Durlacher Brothers, New York, NY, United States by 1951 [2][b]; purchased by Francis Rew Stanton (1911–1995), Winnetka, IL, United States, May 1951 [3]; by inheritance to his wife, Louise Stanton (née Parsons) (1915–2005), Winnetka, IL, United States [4][c]; by bequest to the Yale Center for British Art, 2005.

Notes:
[1] The Lefevre Gallery was a London-based gallery that specialized in modern art. Nicholson exhibited new works at the gallery throughout the 1940s and 1950s.

[2] The Durlacher Brothers art dealership was founded by Henry Durlacher in London, England, 1843. He was later joined by his brother, George Durlacher. R. Kirk Askew joined the firm in the 1920s and initiated the opening of the New York City branch, which proved to be more successful than the original London location. Following George’s retirement in 1938, Askew took over as owner and ran the firm from New York until its closure around 1969.

[3] Francis Rew Stanton was a Chicago-based modernist architect who studied at the Yale School of Architecture. There, he met his wife, Louise Stanton (née Parsons), who was studying portraiture at the Yale School of Fine Arts.
A sticker on the back of the canvas states that the painting is property of "Francis R. Stanton." In addition to this work, Stanton collected multiple paintings by Nicholson.

[4] Originally from Chicago, Louise Stanton (née Parsons) was an abstract artist whose studio was based in Winnetka. Stanton is referred to as the owner of this painting (‘Mrs. F. Stanton’) in the 1956 survey of Nicholson’s work. The painting is featured as no. 39, ‘April 1950 (boquet)’ [sic].
