Lettered inside plate, lower right: "Percy Thomas 1897 Temple"; inscribed on verso, center: "THE CLOISTERS. | ONE of the most interesting survivals of the original grouping of the | Temple Buildings as a Monastic, or quasi-monastic establishment. | The present Hall of the Inner Temple stands upon the site of the | Refectory of the Knights Templars, and the cloister upon that of the | original cloisters connecting the Refectory with the Church. The present | cloister was built in 1681, as an inscription records, in place of its | predecessor destroyed by fire in 1678."
