Created by John Constable (1776-1837), the artist; … ; acquired by Sir Michael Ernest Sadler (1861-1943) by January 1934 [1]; by descent to his son, Michael Sadleir (1888-1957); purchased at auction by Muriel Thetis Warde (1875-1964), Cannon Hall, Cannon Place, Hampstead, at Christie, Manson & Woods, London, England, November 18, 1960 (lot 89, 'An Open Landscape with Clouds'), in "English pictures and drawings" [2] [a]; purchased at auction by P. & D. Colnaghi & Co. at Christie, Manson & Woods, April 2, 1965 (lot 15, 'An extensive Landscape, with grey clouds and blue sky'), in "English pictures and drawings" [b]; purchased by John Baskett (1930-) for Paul Mellon (1907-1999), October 1971 [c]; by whom given to Yale Center for British Art, December 1981.

Notes:
[1] When he exhibited it until March 1934 as cat. no. 14 "At Hampstead - Stormy Weather" per Catalogue of an exhibition of English paintings and drawings, circa 1780-1830 (London: Burlington Fine Arts Club, 1933), 2, https://www.worldcat.org/title/1001126575.
[2] Sold then by "Mrs. Michael Sadler," i.e., Edith (Betty) Sadleir (née Tupper-Carey). Sir Sadler's second wife died in 1940, supporting the hypothesis this is his son Michael's spouse.
