For such a keen observer of all aspects of contemporary life as Thomas Rowlandson, ships and sailors and the bustling lie-and lowlife- of ports and harbors provided an inexhaustible source of subject matter. Rowlandson visited Holland and Germany in 1791. From that tour comes this shipboard view of a Dutch packet-boat crossing the Channel, conveying vividly both the pleasure and the discomfort inherent in such a voyage.
