John Smith Barry, of Marbury Hall, Cheshire, was a devotee of the sport of driving and a keen member of the driving club founded by his cousin the Earl of Barrymore; it was known variously as the Whip Club, the Four in Hand Club, and the Barouche Driving Club. The members prided themselves not only on their skills as drivers but also on a splendid appearance. This is evident in Pollard's painting of the coachyard at Marbury: the black and yellow drag, the grooms in livery of the same colors, and the team of grey horses are all impeccably turned out.
