These scenes of a race meeting at Epsom in Surrey, where the English Derby is run, are from a series of six published in the form of aquatint prints in 1836. The whereabouts of the other two, Saddling in the Warren and The Grand Stand, are at present unknown. From the first scene, The Betting Post, Pollard places some emphasis on the gambling that accompanied the races. In the final painting he changes the setting from Epsom to Tattersall's, near Hyde Park Corner in London. It was on the premises of this celebrated horse auctioneers that betting accounts would be settled and disputes adjudicated on the Monday following the races.
