Archery was a fashionable pursuit for both men and women in early Victorian England, and the meeting depicted is probably that of a local club for enthusiasts. Bradgate House in Leicestershire was a ruin, and its surrounding parkland was open for such public recreations. Ferneley lived a few miles away at Melton Mowbray. He seems to have painted this work as a genre subject, without portraits of particular individuals and without a commission. He never sold it, and it was still in his possession at his death in 1860.
