According to a label on the back of the frame, this painting records an actual incident from a day's foxhunting, when hounds pursued a fox onto the roof of a farmhouse. The work was commissioned by John Sidey of Pudneys Farm, Bures Hamlet, Essex, who appears on the right, riding a grey horse; the hounds were probably his private pack. The artist, James Dunthorne, was a provincial portraitist based in nearby Colchester.
