Bevan lived in the north London suburb of Hampstead but in 1914 took a studio overlooking the Cumberland hay and straw market in town. From his second-floor window he painted different views of the market square, here the north side with the weigh house in the center. In them the place of business looks empty and slightly forlorn, hinting at the decline of the equine economy of which it was a center.
