Bennett | THE SUPREME COURT OF JUDICATURE IN THE ISLAND OF CEYLON. | This Engraving is meant to commemorate, First, the grant made by his present Majesty while Prince Regent, to the natives of Ceylon, of the right of sitting upon Juries, the only instance of such a grant being made by any Government to the natives of Asia, Secondly the abolition of domestic slavery in Ceylon. To Sir Alexander Johnston, late Chief Justice of Ceylon, & first member of his Majestys Council on that Island for the enlightened & benevolent views which he entertains upon these subjects, by whose exertions & according to whose plan of elevating the character of the natives of Ceylon, the above measures were successfully carried into effect, this Plate is dedicated as a mark of respect, by his most obedient humble Servant J.
