This painting is dated on the basis of costume, a black and gold doublet with red cuffs, and a white lace ruff. It came from the collection of the Earl of Sondes, so the sitter may therefore be a relation of the last owner's ancestor Sir Richard Sondes (1571-1645) of Throwley and Lees Court, Kent.
