Inscribed in graphite, upper left: "R. 585"; lower left: "Engraver's Proof with Turners | written instructions | 3/10/ | Neneveh - Proof with Turners | writing - Before the Rays"; lower center: extensive inscription in Turner's hand, beginning: "Sir, I touched the last (adding a flash of Lightning to save you trouble) which you have not accepted nor not taken any notice of. I wish to have all my touched proofs returned to me and always such wile touching the prints in progress. - In regard to the effect it is all too strong for the Drawing, except the foreground"
