Created by Joshua Reynolds, the artist (1723–1792) [a]; ...; private collection, Sussex, England [1][b]; acquired by John Mitchell & Son [2], London, England by 1974 [c]; purchased by the Yale Center for British Art, 1986.

Notes:
[1] According to the catalogue for the 1973 Joshua Reynolds exhibition at the City Art Gallery, Plymouth, England, the portrait was traditionally described as 18th century French School.

[2] John Mitchell & Son was the contemporary name for John Mitchel Fine Art, an art gallery operating in London, England since 1931. The gallery has been run by three generations of the Mitchell family, beginning with John Mitchell, then with his sons and grandsons. John Mitchell’s son, Paul Mitchell, was the dealer who sold this painting to the Yale Center for British Art.
