Manuscript exercise books (for penmanship) by George Holloway, a student at Holly Grove House Academy, in Bushey, Hertfordshire. There is one exercise book for each of the years of 1837, 1838, and 1839. Each comprises a title leaf, executed in decorative capital letters, followed by four leaves of writing samples in a very neat cursive hand (with writing on rectos only). Writing is in pen and black ink throughout.
The writing samples consist of short moral adages, such as "Industry is not only the way to improvement, but the foundation of pleasure." Many of these may have been copied from Lindley Murray's English grammar, a popular textbook of the period.
