Bound in original linen-backed marbled boards, with blue paper, ruled.
Manuscript travel diary, with expenses, detailing visits to France, Belgium, and Switzerland in 1866, and to northern Italy in 1872. The diary is written in pen and black ink, over 49 pages, with numerous corrections. At the end of the volume, there are an additional 20 pages of itemized expenses for the trips, together with those incurred on a visit to Austria and Germany in 1868, and to Ireland in 1871.
The accounts were clearly written while travelling, and are not fair copies transcribed on the diarist's return to England. Three of the trips were made "with Cecil" (also unidentified), and there are many visits to cathedrals and churches, with descriptions.
The lists of expenses include frequent outlays for rail and boat travel, hotels, and meals, and occasional expenditures on baths, churches, photographs, and beer.
