- The Coates family of Durham County had been established at Smelt House since at least 1700, if not before. The house's name appears connected to iron mining that had long been going on the area. Rachel Coates married Joseph Jowitt Fryer in 1836. The Fryer home was called Holly Bank and was located in Rastrick, Yorkshire. Joseph Fryer died while still relatively young, after which Rachel and her five children moved back to Smelt House. Thereafter, the blended Coates and Fryer families resided at Smelt House, with the home passing into the hands of the Fryers in the late nineteenth century. Smelt House remained in the Fryer family until the 1950s, when it was sold. The youngest of Rachel and Joseph Fryer's children, their daughter Rachel Ann, married E.B. Mounsey (the son of John Mounsey and Lucy Backhouse) in 1878.
Collection of 20 original drawings by members of the Fryer and Coates families of County Durham, England. The drawings include 18 views of family houses and the surrounding areas. One of the drawings, of Darlington New Park, is in watercolor over graphite; the rest are in graphite alone. Also present are two portraits, in graphite, of an unidentified man and an unidentified mother and child. There is a single photograph, depicting Smelt House.
Three of the drawings are dated 1835; four are dated 1836. Most of the drawings are unsigned. Three are signed S. Coates, and one is signed R. Coates. Presumably, the artists are Sarah Coates (1810-1840) and her sister Rachel Coates Fryer (1806-1852).
Places identified in the drawings include Smelt House, Holly Bank, Norton, Witton Castle, Toothill House and Toothill Grove, and Darlington New Park.
The drawings are loosely collected in plain paper wrappers, inscribed: "Family drawings. Some by Rachel Fryer, my mother. J. Fryer, 1898." Further housed in a nineteenth century calf-backed portfolio, with marbled paper boards and linen ties. - Subject Terms:
